Lesson 5 (part 13)108 chanting of Ganesh mantra's(invocation), Abhiskem(ritual bathing) of your Shri Ganesh Murthi and dressing and adorning the murthi(image), food offerings, final offerings, Maha Ganapati Tantric mantra and Jappa, closing prayer.

-13th and final part of Lesson 5 "Shri Shiva Shaktipath's Shri Ganesha Puja" - this part of the lesson will be followed by a reposting of all 13 parts of Lesson 5 together in order, with pics and video demonstrations, a video of full puja performed in English and Sanskrit and will include mudra(hand mantra's) examples and pics! as well as a couple corrections.  Thank you for your patience I  know this was a long drawn out lesson, but once you start to perform this puja I assure you it will have been worth it!

Shri Ganesha main invocation mantra- by the time you get to performing the Shri Shiva Shaktipath Shri Ganesha Puja, you should have already gained Siddhi of Ganesh’s Main Mantra “Aum gam ganapataye namah”  here you will repeat it out loud  108 times you can use a 108 count mala and chant the mantra for each bead holding the mala in your hand as you would for jappa you can ring the bell while chanting.

Aum Gam Ganapataye namah
OM GAM GAWN AH POT EYE YAY NA MAH

(replace this mantra with Maha Ganapati Tantric Mantra once you have gained siddhi of it.)

When you are done chanting you may immediately break a coconut, drain the water into a dish large enough to hold it, and place the two halves on the alter, sprinkle the coconut water on yourself ,others in attendance and on the image of Lord Ganesh. In Shri Shiva Shaktipath Tantra this represents the blood sacrifices of ancient times and in some traditions the breaking of the ego.  If you do not have a coconut or do not wish to offer one, simply skip this part and proceed.

Abhishekam(ritual bathing of image of Ganesh)
Perform this part only if you have a water proof/safe murthi like a stone or metal statue, you will need one or two large containers of water like a juice pitcher, or water carafe and a large mug for the herbal tea bath.  As well as a large pan or dish into which you can respectfully place the image of lord Ganesh upright, so you can perform your abhishekam and catch the water and herbal tea.  If your image is very large and heavy(like mine) you can leave it in place clear everything from the alter, flowers, and candle and incense set them aside respectfully so they don’t get wet, keep the incense and candle lit,  wrap a large towel around the base of the murthi to catch the water and herbal tea. When you are done with the abhishekam simply remove the wet towel and set aside.

Say the following mantra out loud(say once for each container of water) and then gently and respectfully pour the water over the image of Ganesh:

Om Gam Ganapataye namah ganga snanam samarpayami
OM, GUM, GAWN AH POT EYE YAY NA MAH, GONG GA, SNAH NAWM, SA MAR PIE YA MI
We salute and bow to lord Ganapati lord of wisdom, lord of multitudes, lord of the path gate! With this offering of refreshing water for your bath.

(Repeat if necessary)

For the herbal tea bath you will need a muslin teabag or tea envelope (hand made muslin tea bags can be purchased in our online Emporium.)   To make this herbal bathing tea, you will need cinnamon bark/sticks, allspice berries(crushed) or powder and loose chamomile tea. These items can be purchased at most grocery stores in the spice isles or natural food isles and tea/coffee isles (at some point we will carry these herbs in our emporium).  Fill the tea bag or tea envelope with generous equal amounts of the cinnamon, allspice and chamomile.  close it up tight so the ingredients can’t leak out into the water.  Boil some water, filling a microwave safe mug with water and microwaving it on high for 2mins is the easiest and quickest way to do this(carefull the water will be scalding hot!) Place the herb filled tea bag or envelope into the hot water and let it steep, do this prior to the Puja so it gives it time to cool before you use it! The significance of the herbs will be explained in a later lesson on Tantric herbs and curios associated with Ganesh.

Say the following mantra out loud and then gently and respectfully pour the cooled herbal tea over the image of Ganesh.

Om Gam Ganapataye namah gandha snanam samarpayami
OM, GUM, GAWN AH POT EYE YAY NA MAH, GAWND HA, SNAH NAWM, SA MAR PIE YA MI
We salute and bow to lord Ganapati lord of wisdom, lord of multitudes, lord of the path gate! With this offering of a three herb tea for your bath.

Gently and respectfully return the murthi/statue to its home on the alter, it is not necessary to dry off the murthi simply let it air dry. Set the pan or dish filled with water aside, And proceed with your ritual.

Offer water to wash hands and feet(simply dip your right middle finger into the water you have on your offering tray(not the water you will offer to drink) and gently touch Ganesha’s feet and say the following mantra)

Om gam ganapataye namah padyam samarpayami
OM GUM, GAWN AH POT EYE YAY, NA MAH, POD YAWM, SA MAR PIE YA MEE
We salute and bow to lord Ganapati lord of wisdom, lord of multitudes, lord of the path gate! With this offering of water to wash your feet.

Dip your right middle finger into the water again and this time gently touch Ganesha’s hands and mouth and say the following mantra:

Om gam ganapataye namah achamaniyam samarpayami
OM GUM, GAWN AH POT EYE YAY, NA MAH, AW CHA MA NEE YUM, SA MAR PIE YA MEE
We salute and bow to lord Ganapati lord of wisdom, lord of multitudes, lord of the path gate! With this offering of water to wash your hands and mouth.

Sacred oil offering- here you can either offer a sweet smelling scented oil( oils from india’s “Golden sandal wood” is a favorite of Lord Ganesh)or specially prepared Tantric oil (you will learn how to make Tantric oils in later lessons) put a small dab on the tip of your middle finger don’t over saturate say the following mantra out loud and touch ganesh’s hands, feet, ears, 3rd eye.  Then touch your own hands, feet, ears and 3rd eye with the same finger.

Money offerings – money offerings can be in any denomination and can be placed respectfully in Ganesh’s hands or at his feet. If you are the one making the offering simply reuse the offering each ritual or make a donation with it, or you can use it as luck money for yourself or others! Spend it wisely ;) If you are performing this Ritual for someone else and they bring offerings of money. Offer the money, and at the end of the day, you may take the offering as a donation for your services.( at Shri Shiva Shaktinath Temple we do not charge for rituals and puja’s but ask that people make a donation in the form of a money offering in the amount of their choosing, Of which 10% is donated back to the community) Ganesh favors charity!

Say the following mantra out loud and make money offering:

Om gam ganapataye namah dhanam samarpayami
OM GUM, GAWN AH POT EYE YAY, NA MAH, DHA NAWM, SA MAR PIE YA MEE
We salute and bow to lord Ganapati, lord of wisdom, lord of multitudes, lord of the path gate! With this offering of money.

Food offering – food offerings for Ganesh, should be sugars and sweets, candy, dried fruits, or traditional modhaka(steamed sweet rice dumplings).  Food offerings can be as simple as raisins and store bought cookies, coconut macaroons, small confection cup filled with sugar or honey, or milk with a teaspoon of sugar and a sprinkle of nutmeg. I like to offer nonperishable foods such as; raisins, dried fruit and store bought duplex cookies. Its simple yet respectable and won’t spoil if left out on the alter for the day. Respectfully place the prepared containers of food on the alter in front of Ganesh.  Food offerings should be given as prasadam/blessed food offerings to those in attendance and consumed.  If you perform this ritual by yourself take one of each food item or a piece of each food item offered and consume immediately upon completion of the ritual leaving the rest for Ganesh and his attendants.  The act of consuming the blessed food offerings, internalizes the blessings as the food has been touched and tasted by the divine.

For each food item say the following mantra out loud:

Om gam ganapataye namah bhog naivedyam samarpayami
OM GUM, GAWN AH POT EYE YAY, NA MAH, BHOGUE NIE VED YUM, SA MAR PIE YA MEE

If you choose not to offer Camphor simply move on to the next step…

Jappa:

Here you will insert a Ganesh mantra, generally you will chose one that correlates with the purpose of the puja, you will learn Ganesh Tantric Siddhi mantra’s in the next lesson.  At this time you will begin with the Maha Ganapati Tantric Mantra, you will use this mantra for 48 days to gain siddhi(spiritual powers) of this mantra! Once you have gained siddhi of this mantra you will replace the “Aum Gam Ganapataye namah” mantra with “Aum shrim hrim klim glaum gam ganapataye vara varada sarva janamme vashamanaya svaha ” this is the most important Ganesh mantra to a Tantric practitioner as it unites Ganesh with several Shakti bija’s it proclaims you are one with Ganesh and united with his shakti to fulfill ones wishes and desires.

jappa instructions- with your eyes closed breath in deeply and breath out deeply through your nose then count to 9 in your mind while breathing in through the left nostril hold it count 1 and begin breathing out through the right nostril hold one count and then breath back in through the right nostril counting to 9 hold one and breath and back out through the left nostril while counting to 9 this may take some practice for you to get down,  if you don’t understand rhythmic breathing that’s ok! simply breath in and out in a relaxing manner through your nose that is comfortable to you try alternating between nostrils and imagine you are bringing the energy up from the base of the spine… continue this rhythmic breathing pattern while performing jappa make sure you are breathing at a relaxing pace but not so relaxing that you pass out,  try to just breath a little slower than you normally would.  Holding the mala in your right hand in between your thumb and middle finger. say the mantra for each bead on the mala while pulling the beads toward yourself and down starting with the first bead just after the guru bead and stop just before the guru bead, do not count the guru bead....for a total of 108 chants you may chant the mantra out loud or quietly in your mind.

It is recommended when learning new mantras to start by chanting the mantra out loud till you feel you are comfortable with the mantra and then begin chanting the mantra quietly in your mind.

Maha Ganapati Tantric mantra:

Aum shrim hrim klim glaum gam ganapataye vara varada sarva janamme vashamanaya svaha
OM SHREEM HREEM KLEEM GLOWM GUM, GAWN AH POT EYE YAY, VA RA, VA ROD AH, SAR VA, JOHN AWM MAY, VAW SHA MAWN EYE YA, SVA HA

Closing prayer recite the following mantras out loud and make flower offering:

Vakratunda mahakaya surya koti samaprabha avighnam kuru me deva sarva karyeshu sarvada
VOCK RA TOON DA, MA HAWK EYE YA, SIR YA, KO TEE, SAW MA PRA BHA, AW VEEGH NAWM, KOO ROO, MAY, DAY VA, SAR VA, KAR YAY SHU, SAR VA DA
oh my Lord with a broken tusk who’s great body shines like a million suns, make us free from all obstacles! Always remain with us through all actions.

Ekadantam mahakayam lambodaram gajananam vighna nashakaram devam heram bam pranamam yaham
EH KA DAWN TOM, MA HAWK EYE YUM, LAWM BO DA ROM, GA JAW NA NAWM, VEEGH NA, NA SHOK AH ROM, DAY VAWM, HAIR UM, BAWM, PRA NA MOM, YA HUM
with a single tooth, a great round body, big belly and the face of a mighty elephant, he is the God who destroys all obstacles to whom we bow in prayer with devotion.

Ete gand ha pushpe om gam ganapataye namah
EH TAY, GAWND HA PUSH PAY, OM GUM, GAWN AH POT EYE YAY, NA MAH
With this offering of a flower we salute and bow to the Lord of Wisdom Lord multitudes
